Brief history of our Club

In the late 1980’s, a group of r/c sailors, who had been sailing in Orlando, received permission from the City of South Daytona to allow model sailing on the ‘unimproved’ lake, now known as Reed Canal Pond.
Informal sailing went on for many years, 36/600’s, Marblehead’s, EC12 Meters, and the newly emerged Soling One Meter. Permanent buoys were put out.
The city built concrete docks (still in place) at the north and south ends and in July, 1994, the South Daytona R/C Model Yacht Club received AMYA Sanction #163. One of the founders and first officers, Chuck Buzek, was elected to the AMYA Hall of Fame.
The club first held a sanctioned regatta for Soling One Meters in March of 1995.
Over the years the club hosted the All-Florida Soling Cup, and an annual Florida EC12 regatta. More recently, a regatta for the Dragon Flite 95 was held.
The fleet of boats has evolved with the sport, with EC12’s giving way to the US12, and now to the more modern Dragon Force 65 and Dragon Flite 95, the era of the boat builder giving way to the high performance ‘plug ‘n play’ hot rods. The Solings remain a strong class.
The park and pond were completely renovated in the early 2000’s with a walking path and paved parking areas, and the city, more recently, built a new dock for the club at the south end of the pond.
